House Appropriations Committee Republicans today released the draft fiscal year 2024 Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies funding bill, which will be considered in subcommittee tomorrow. With massive cuts that renege on the debt limit agreement that was just signed into law, the bill raises costs for families and weakens energy security and our ability to out-compete China.
"The United States had 18 different billion-dollar weather disasters in 2022. And last year is building on an increasing trend. A recent report found that 90 percent of the counties in the United States suffered weather disasters in the last decade, impacting 93 percent of the country’s population – more than 300 million people. It is undeniable that we are witnessing growing weather events stemming from climate change occurring in real time before our very eyes."
"The Energy and Water bill has impacts throughout the country in every Member's district, which is why it is so important that we have this opportunity for Members to provide input into the process."
"The Department of Energy’s budget request is paramount to ensure American energy independence, which is fundamental to our national security."
Based on information the House Appropriations Committee received from agency leaders in the Biden Administration, House Republicans’ reported proposal to cut fiscal year 2024 discretionary spending back to the fiscal year 2022 enacted level—resulting in a cut of at least 22 percent for essential programs—would increase costs for hard working people and middle-class families.
