Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, delivered the following remarks at the Committee's markup of the fiscal year 2024 Energy and Water Development, and Related Agencies bill.
During today’s House Appropriations Subcommittee markup of the 2024 Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies funding bill, House Republicans passed a bill that reneges on the debt limit agreement that was just signed into law, raises costs for families, and weakens energy security and our ability to out-compete China.
My goals for the 2024 Energy and Water bill are to lower energy bills for American families, create jobs by growing and supporting a robust manufacturing sector, promote American energy independence, and out-compete China. But that’s not what this bill does.
Unfortunately, I must oppose this bill. Despite recently passing a bipartisan debt deal that included a path forward on spending levels, the majority party has chosen to turn their back on those promises and cater to the most extreme minority of their party. This bill has no chance to become law as it is written now. Americans don’t want this stand off; they want us to work together to do our jobs.
