"NASA continues to be respected throughout the world as a leader in advancing our knowledge of the Earth, the solar system, and the wider universe, as well as in advancing human space exploration, developing new technologies with wide applications, and helping to establish more fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly aviation. It is my hope that NASA will continue to inspire young Americans to pursue STEM-related careers."

"Americans depend on the work that CDC, NIH, and ASPR does. They rely on you to stay healthy. You improve our quality of life. You ensure we are constantly developing new treatments. You protect us from public health threats, including from the Covid pandemic, which has so tragically taken more than 1 million American lives over the last 3 years. That is why I must mention how deeply concerned I am over some of my House Republican colleagues’ calls for massive spending cuts to many of the programs that keep families and communities healthy."

"The Coast Guard plays a critical role in many facets of our lives — from saving those in peril to securing our borders and ensuring our national security. The Coast Guard’s fiscal year 2024 budget request of $13.2 billion makes key investments in personnel, vessels, aircraft, and other programs that will assist in its search and rescue mission along with critical activities at our maritime border, including the interdiction of drugs and addressing the increasing flow of migrants."
April 19, 2023 Statement
"Our country has long been a global leader in science, but the National Science Board’s 2022 Science and Engineering Indicators report showed that we have been losing ground to our biggest competitors. We have been overdue for a revival of Federal investment in the research, development, and education that bolsters our American national security, keeps us at the cutting edge of innovation, and cultivates the workforce needed to power the 21st century economy for this country. As Ranking Member of this subcommittee, I will continue to strongly support NSF’s role in the future, as envisioned by CHIPS and Science."

"The cuts would endanger our national security by reducing our efforts to enforce export controls, including those that keep goods and sensitive defense technologies away from our adversaries. They would weaken our economic competitiveness by reducing our capacity to promote trade and investment. If implemented, programs that create stronger communities and better paying jobs across the nation would be dramatically reduced. And initiatives to prepare for disasters and to adapt to our changing climate would be drastically cut."
April 18, 2023 Statement
"I am greatly concerned that proposals by many in Congress, and there are voices out there talking about as much as 22 percent decreases for departments across the board. Those calls for slashes in funding in discretionary spending will greatly damage these efforts."
April 18, 2023 Statement
"The progress the Navy and Marine Corps makes towards improving the quality of life for our Sailors, Marines, and their families will undoubtedly help recruitment and retention efforts. That is why continued strong investments in these programs is essential and why I am pleased to see an improved budget request from the Navy and Marine Corps this year."
April 18, 2023 Statement
"The frequency and severity of disasters not just in Texas but all over the country is on the rise and increasing in severity. FEMA’s work helps communities affected by these disasters. The disaster relief fund provides the funding necessary to respond to disasters like in Texas and assist with the recovery process, including providing critical resources and supplies. FEMA plays a vital role in helping during our greatest time of need, before, during, and after disasters."
April 18, 2023 Statement
"This fails to mention the loss of life among our country’s most innocent in the last year – in places where our children should be focusing on their future by learning in our Nation’s classrooms. A recent poll found that one in five Americans have lost a family member who was fatally shot. This is a “new normal” that we simply cannot sustain. I was proud to support the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act last year, which was an important first step in addressing gun violence prevention efforts at all levels of government."
April 18, 2023 Statement
"More funding and greater flexibility is critical to preserving and expanding our affordable housing and sustaining our communities. The alternative is taking a step back on the progress we have made to address homelessness, safety, and community revitalization."
