While there are many provisions in this bill that I support, a number of specific cuts are deeply troubling. This bill would require a drastic retreat from our engagement in multilateral organizations, and State and USAID personnel.
Deep cuts will not significantly reduce our deficit or help pay down our debt; however, they could leave us vulnerable to the spread of extremist ideology, substantially weaken our standing in the world, and make it more difficult to achieve our goals on the global stage.
Diplomacy and development programs are critical to protecting our national security, maintaining U.S. global leadership, and promoting economic growth.
With so many concerns about who the opposition is, who we are working with, and whether Syria will break into fragments, first and foremost what the Administration's goal is in Syria and how the Congress can help achieve it.
Our challenge is how to strike the right balance between mission objectives and evolving security environments: How do we provide the brave men and women who serve overseas with the protection they need, while still allowing them the freedom to do their jobs?
