As the threat of a terrorist attack still looms large, I find it unfortunate that the Republican-drafted bill ignores so many key investments on the domestic front that are critical to our security here at home.

Rather than presenting a reasonable budget that continues the momentum of our economic recovery, the Republicans have decided to double-down on their bogus economic theory called 'cut and grow.' Its clear from what were seeing in the economy that if these cuts were enacted, they would lead to a severe setback for economic growth by shedding more government jobs and further depressing state and local government spending.

Everyday people across the country leave their homes in search of work, only to return at the end of the day with more worries and less hope. At a time that people continue to struggle to make ends meet, Republicans want to cut funding to WIC and other food programs that are helping put food on the table.

Cuts in compromise bill will be painful but critical investments have been preserved...The important thing is that the agreement we considered today was considerably better than the draconian and economically-harmful version H.R. 1 that the House Republicans pushed through the House earlier in the year (HR1 / HR1473 Comparison Table)

The compromise legislation includes some clear achievements for our caucus, including protection critical funding for Pell Grants, various elements of the new health care reform law, the Head Start program and Community Services Block Grants. At the same time the compromise that was reached between the House Republican Leadership, Senator Reid and the Administration included several elements that many of our Members would not have accepted.
