Amendment would reopen all federal agencies through February 8, allow critical disaster recovery efforts to get underway

House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY-17) today submitted to the House Rules Committee an amendment to House Democrats’ emergency disaster appropriations bill that would reopen all federal agencies through February 8.

“Americans who have been affected by natural disasters must be able to count on a federal government that is fully open and operating. My amendment will end the Trump Shutdown, reopen the government through February 8, pay federal workers, and give us time to negotiate on border security and immigration policy,” Chairwoman Lowey said. “I urge my colleagues to support this amendment to help disaster victims and all American families, business, and communities who have been harmed by the Trump Shutdown.”

The Lowey amendment, which will be considered by the House Rules Committee this afternoon, would provide for a Continuing Resolution for all currently unfunded federal agencies through February 8. The amendment will allow federal agencies to begin carrying out critical disaster recovery efforts funded in the emergency disaster appropriations bill. The underlying bill, which is expected to be considered in the House tomorrow, provides $12.14 billion in emergency spending to assist Americans affected by recent hurricanes, typhoons, wildfires, and other natural disasters with relief and recovery.
