Lowey Statement on House Passage of Legislation to Reopen Government, End Trump Shutdown

January 3, 2019
Press Release

House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY-17) released the following statement after the House passed, on two bipartisan votes, bills that fully fund most federal agencies through September 30 and continue funding at current levels for Homeland Security through February 8:

“Responsibly funding the government is one of the most important duties of Congress. I am proud that House Democrats have upheld that responsibility on our very first day by passing legislation that has already garnered bipartisan support and that will quickly end the Trump Shutdown.

“This legislation moves forward in the areas where there has already been bipartisan agreement in the Senate, restoring vital services for the American people and allowing public servants to get back to work. And it provides additional time for a resolution on Homeland Security funding.

“Senate Republicans now face a choice: They can vote for bills they have already supported and reopen the government or they can block them and prolong this unnecessary shutdown.”
