Our public witnesses represent a wide array of perspectives and expertise that help Congress better assess the impact and effectiveness of foreign assistance. As we assess the President’s budget request for Fiscal Year 2020, your voices are critical to the appropriations process. Let me be clear: Our nation’s security cannot afford a budget that does not adequately fund our diplomatic and development programs, or life-saving humanitarian assistance. The draconian cuts this administration continues to advocate are irresponsible – particularly at a time of unprecedented human suffering – and wholesale, haphazard cuts are not an option.
"Whether you are here in Washington or in the comfort of your own home, you can watch Congress and the executive branch in action on C-SPAN. "Effectively supporting the mental health of our veterans is one of my highest priorities on this subcommittee. Effective and robust mental health programs must be available to all veterans 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or we will continue to fail our veterans and our country."
"Only by conducting scientific research on gun injury prevention can we better understand the causes of this crisis and develop and implement a public health response to reduce injuries and death. Yet, without dedicated funding from Congress, the CDC, which should lead these efforts, cannot move forward with this vital work."
