June 15, 2023 Statement
If we repeat history, individual and unit readiness will suffer, but we will not save money. A reduction in civilian personnel will also increase delays in the oversight and execution of acquisition contracts. That means more time in the valley of death for small businesses and startups. It will blunt our military’s technological edge.
June 15, 2023 Statement
Every service member has something unique to bring to the table. The sum of their skills, their determination, their experiences and their perspectives is the greatest asset our military has. Fostering an environment where every American who would willingly put their lives on the line to protect and serve this nation feels they are welcomed and supported should not be controversial. This bill fails to meet the agreement signed into law. I urge my colleagues to focus on the end goal of funding our government rather than pushing messaging bills that have no future.
June 15, 2023 Statement
My goals for the 2024 Energy and Water bill are to lower energy bills for American families, create jobs by growing and supporting a robust manufacturing sector, promote American energy independence, and out-compete China. But that’s not what this bill does.
June 15, 2023 Statement
Unfortunately, I must oppose this bill. Despite recently passing a bipartisan debt deal that included a path forward on spending levels, the majority party has chosen to turn their back on those promises and cater to the most extreme minority of their party. This bill has no chance to become law as it is written now. Americans don’t want this stand off; they want us to work together to do our jobs.

June 13, 2023 Statement
This is the first 2024 bill we are marking up in full committee, and despite having a bill with a topline signed into law, we are operating under unprecedented circumstances that follow a months-long saga of Republicans holding the global economy hostage and placing us on the brink of default and economic catastrophe.
June 13, 2023 Statement
While Republicans are now fully funding Medical Care at VA, we now know – thanks to a press story last night leaking the full slate of 302(b) allocations, that the rest of the domestic bills that veterans rely on will be gutted. We literally just passed the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act, and Republicans are already reneging on the agreement.
May 18, 2023 Statement
I am concerned today as I come here because it is very difficult, despite my faith, to rejoice in this markup because today this bill turns its back on rural America. It is a retreat from our most vulnerable communities. This bill really makes it more difficult to implement the purpose and to have a level playing field for all Americans.
