Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Democrat on the Appropriations Committee and the State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee, today issued the following statement regarding a pending vote in the United Nations Security Council on Israeli settlement activity:

"I call on the Obama Administration to veto today's UN Security Council resolution regarding Israeli settlement activity and to uphold longstanding US policy of defending Israel against one-sided resolutions. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict should not be internationalized. Only the parties themselves can resolve their complicated differences through direct negotiations. The proposed resolution will not further the cause of peace."

"President-elect Trump has proposed an incoherent economic and fiscal policy of deficit-exploding tax breaks along with huge increases in defense and infrastructure spending, and faces a looming need to raise the federal debt limit. Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, today delivered the following remarks on the House floor regarding the second FY2017 Continuing Resolution:

“Today we consider the second continuing resolution to keep most of the government open. To say that I am disappointed in this Band-Aid approach to operating the government would be an understatement.

“The legislation before us is an abdication of responsibility for the entire Congress. It is a disgrace that more than two months into the new fiscal year, Congress will kick the can down the road nearly another five months for purely partisan reasons. Having already failed this year to adopt a budget, pass Appropriations bills, and restore regular order, the majority’s failure to enact full-year funding is not surprising, but nonetheless shameful.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, today slammed the Republican majority’s decision to abandon the FY2017 Appropriations process in favor of a 3-month Continuing Resolution:

“The majority’s plan to abandon the Fiscal year 2017 spending bills this year makes clear their intent to disregard the public’s desire for Republicans and Democrats to work together to meet critical challenges. It is a disgrace.

“The Republican majority failed to adopt a budget resolution, failed to pass Appropriations bills in the House and Senate, and failed to uphold their commitment to regular order. So it is not shocking, but is nonetheless outrageous, that they are punting on the entire process until the President-elect takes office, abandoning any semblance of competent governance.
