Republicans Introduce 2027 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Funding Bill
WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee Republicans released the 2027 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill, which will be considered in the subcommittee tomorrow.
“Our subcommittee is tasked with crafting a bill that invests in military infrastructure and quality-of-life projects for servicemembers and their families and ensures veterans receive the benefits they have earned. While there is much that I agree with in this bill, it sadly underfunds vital military construction and VA priorities. I also fear other bills will short-change veterans and servicemembers, who sacrificed so much, and saddle them with even more cost-of-living burdens. My hope is we can also honor past PACT Act guaranteed funding level commitments in the Toxic Exposures Fund (TEF), since this bill as it stands, underfunds the TEF,” Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee Ranking Member Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL-25) said. “While this bill avoids deep, across the board cuts and, as of now, does not include many of the toxic culture war riders we saw in previous bills, there are, once again, needlessly divisive riders in this bill. Democrats are ready to work to strengthen this bill and deliver the better healthcare, services, bases and housing that all our veterans and servicemembers deserve. I am hopeful that we can work together to produce a consensus, bipartisan bill.”
“Unlike last year’s proposal, Republicans’ fiscal year 2027 veterans and military construction funding bill includes several safeguards to ensure the VA puts veterans first. While this is a step forward, the bill fails to honor our PACT Act commitments to advance fund health care for veterans exposed to toxic chemicals, threatening the consistency of their care. Additionally, the bill reneges on our commitment to our NATO allies by falling short of what we promised for NATO’s infrastructure program and includes divisive riders,” Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) said. “House Republicans must acknowledge that veterans rely on programs across the entire federal government. By slashing critical domestic investments in other funding bills, they will strip away education, job opportunities, housing, and food assistance that veterans and their families depend on. While this bill includes some important investments Democrats support, we must do everything we can to lower the cost of living for our veterans and ensure they are able to find jobs, feed their families, and keep roofs over their heads.”
