Lowey Statement on Passage of Defense and Labor-HHS-Educations Appropriations Minibus

House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Nita Lowey (D-NY) released the following statement on House passage of the conference committee report on the fiscal year 2019 Defense and Labor-HHS-Educations Appropriations Minibus:

“The Defense and Labor-HHS-Education bills carry out some of Congress’ most important Constitutional responsibilities and I am pleased that Congress has completed our work on these bills on time.

“The conference report provides ample resources for our armed services and strengthens military readiness. It upholds our commitments to our service members and their families by providing more funding to repair Department of Defense schools, additional resources to assist victims of military sexual assault, and strong support for military medical research.

“With this legislation, Congress has resoundingly rejected President Trump’s budget and restored $10 billion in proposed cuts that would have hurt working families. Instead, we have secured increased funding for biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health, expanded opioid abuse treatment and prevention programs, and new initiatives for maternal and child health. Just as important is what this legislation does not include: the unnecessary partisan riders that caused House Democrats to oppose the Labor-HHS-Education bill in the Appropriations Committee.

“I thank my colleagues in both chambers and on both sides of the aisle for their work to pass this legislation. I urge President Trump to now quickly sign it into law.”
