The House today passed a $4.6 billion emergency supplemental to provide humanitarian relief to migrant children and families at the southern border.
"We could have done better for the children and families. But unfortunately, the White House and the Senate would not allow that. So, we will fight another day – and we will never stop fighting to protect the children, who are our future."
House Democrats, led by House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY-17), today introduced an amendment strengthening the Senate’s emergency humanitarian supplemental by making critical improvements to support children and families.
The House today passed, on a 224 to 196 vote, the fiscal year 2020 Financial Services and General Government appropriations bill. The legislation provides annual funding for the Department of the Treasury, the Judiciary, the Executive Office of the President, and other independent agencies, including the Small Business Administration.
The legislation, H.R. 3401, provides $4.5 billion in emergency spending to address the humanitarian crisis at the border, with significant funding for priorities including legal assistance, food, water, and medical services, support services and stronger protections for unaccompanied children, and alternatives to detention.
