Unfortunately, there are significant parts of the bill where we are not in agreement which prevent me from being able to support the bill in its current form. From a taxpayer perspective, the most prominent area of concern is the $4.9 billion in the bill for new border fencing.
Thank you, Chairman Yoder, Ranking Member Roybal-Allard, and Chairman Frelinghuysen for your work on this bill.
At the outset, I would like to acknowledge that this is the last markup over which Chairman Frelinghuysen will preside. He is going to accomplish a great deal in the remaining months of the 115th Congress, but I cannot let this opportunity pass without saying a few kind words.
From serving in the Army during the Vietnam War to the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the New Jersey General Assembly, and the halls of Congress, you have dedicated your life to public service.
The family separation fiasco of the last several weeks is testament to the need for careful oversight of the department’s activities. The administration’s zeal to aggressively enforce immigration law can never be an excuse to ignore the fundamental civil rights of individuals, including the right to keep one’s family intact.
It is outrageous that House Republicans have prioritized unnecessary funds for President Trump’s border wall and cruel immigration policies rather than fighting terrorism through substantial new investments in first responder grants or growing the economy and creating jobs through job training, making college more affordable, or research and development initiatives.
