Sequestration will slow economic growth and job creation while cutting services and investments critical to the American people.

Congress has cut discretionary spending by $1.5 trillion over ten years through reductions in Appropriations bills and future spending caps. These reductions are jeopardizing economic growth and services and investments critical to families... before sequestration even begins.

The sequester was designed to be painful, and if it goes forward, it will be. Results will include furloughs of air traffic controllers, food inspectors, and border patrol; reduced investments in safe drinking water and medical research; and diminished military readiness and embassy security.

The House Appropriations Committee will play a key role in the 113th Congress as we work to create jobs, invest in our future, and reduce the deficit and debt in a balanced and responsible way, said Lowey. "I am pleased the Democratic caucus has ratified the 12 subcommittee Ranking Members and all Democrats who will serve on the Committee. I am especially proud to have helped lead the bipartisan effort to pass the full assistance package for the affected areas, as the first order of business in the 113th Congress....The desperately-needed relief in this bill will help families and individuals put their lives back together and assist in rebuilding transportation networks and public infrastructure vital to commerce and our quality of life.
