Trump Administration Spent Tens of Millions in Taxpayer Funds on Ballroom and then Lied About It

June 16, 2026

WASHINGTON – Today, House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued a statement following a report in the Washington Post that confirmed the Trump administration planned to use more than $300 million in taxpayer money to fund the president’s billionaire ballroom, and has already spent tens of millions of taxpayer dollars on its construction, while brazenly lying to the American people the whole time.

“American families cannot afford food, gas, healthcare or rent. Instead of doing anything to provide relief, President Trump spent tens of millions of your tax dollars on his ballroom vanity project and then lied about it. According to this report, the administration committed months ago to spending at least $300 million of taxpayers’ money on the ballroom vanity project and they have been lying about it since.

“While families struggle to afford basic necessities, the only things the Trump administration can provide are slush funds for criminals, fistfights on the South Lawn, and ballrooms for billionaires. The most corrupt administration in American history.

“My colleagues and I on the Appropriations Committee will continue to fight for the transparency into how taxpayer money is spent that the American people deserve.”
