Speaker Johnson is Shutting Down the House to Avoid Addressing the Health Care Crisis

September 19, 2025

WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement on Speaker Mike Johnson canceling the two days of previously-scheduled votes before a Republican shutdown, Monday, September 29, and Tuesday, September 30:

“Just like he canceled votes to avoid releasing the Epstein files, Speaker Johnson would rather send members home than do the hard work of governing. Beyond allowing members to leave Washington before we have addressed the looming funding deadline, he has extended the Republican vacation by two days. Speaker Johnson is silencing members and shutting down the House in advance of a government-wide shutdown. This move is shameful and must be reversed.”
