Republicans Fail to Address Cost of Living Crisis, Instead Hand ICE and CBP $70 Billion until 2035

April 21, 2026

WASHINGTON – Today, House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro issued the following statement on the release of Republicans’ partisan budget resolution that would give U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) $70 billion until 2035 on top of the $140 billion they received in the Big Beautiful Bill:

“Families and hardworking people are struggling to get by. From skyrocketing gas prices to impossibly high grocery costs, Americans are begging President Trump and Republicans to act on the cost-of-living crisis. Instead, every action they take is making this crisis worse. While Republicans claim they cannot do anything to lower health care costs or make child care affordable, they want to hand ICE and CBP another $70 billion. Working families are living paycheck to paycheck with no relief, yet Republicans can somehow find tens of billions of dollars for these unchecked, lawless agencies.

“The Department of Homeland Security is about to run out of their slush fund, confirming today that they will be unable to pay workers after May 2nd. It is shameful that House Republicans continue to sit on the bill the Senate passed twice by unanimous consent, putting the paychecks of hardworking people at risk. It is past time for House Republican leadership to stop blocking this bill.

“Instead of working with Democrats to responsibly fund these agencies, Republicans’ solution is to issue another blank check through this partisan process, which sets an unacceptable and costly precedent. Funding the government through partisan backroom deals orchestrated by Republican leadership and outside the Appropriations Committee is not a responsible or sustainable way to govern. This is a way for Republicans to avoid making any new reforms to an out of control agency.”
