Republican Shutdown: Nine Months in the Making

September 23, 2025

**NEW RESOURCE** Timeline on the Republican Plan to Shut Down the Government

President Trump Chickens Out, Cancels Meeting Because Republicans Have No Plan to Lower Costs and Address the Health Care Crisis They Created

WASHINGTON — As President Trump cancels his meeting with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) released a new timeline on the looming Republican shutdown:

“Leader Jeffries said it best, ‘Trump Always Chickens Out.’ Republicans got us into this mess. They have driven up costs and created a health care crisis that is going to make it even more difficult for Americans to simply get by. Instead of meeting, President Trump is rambling on social media—not once mentioning the rising cost-of-living—and creating even more chaos on the global stage.

“With a week until a government shutdown, President Trump and Republicans refuse to figure out a path forward to lower costs and address the health care crisis. They have total control of Washington. Their partisan funding bill failed, and they decided to leave town for two weeks to hide rather than do the hard work of governing.

“But this was all by design. For nine months, since President Trump took office, Republicans have been working to shut down the government. Now it is here, and they are nowhere to be found.”

A timeline on Republicans’ plan to shut down the government is here.
