MAGA Republicans Continue to Block Bipartisan Bill to Fund Department of Homeland Security

March 31, 2026

WASHINGTON – After House Republican leadership chose to extend the Homeland Security shutdown by blocking the bipartisan bill passed unanimously by the Senate, the shutdown continued, becoming the longest in American history.

“Speaker Mike Johnson and MAGA Republicans blocked a bipartisan settlement that would have funded the government and allowed federal workers across the Department of Homeland Security to be paid.

“Instead of fully funding TSA, FEMA, the Coast Guard, cybersecurity, and the Secret Service, House Republican leadership surrendered to radical right-wing hardliners in their conference and refused to even allow the measure to receive a vote.

“If the bill were brought up it would pass overwhelmingly. It would allow us to fund the majority of Homeland Security, while separating out ICE and Border Patrol funding as negotiations continue on reforms that the American people are demanding.

“Speaker Johnson must call the House back into session immediately, bring up the Senate-passed bill for a vote, and send it to President Trump’s desk so we can end this shutdown.”

The Senate-passed bill provides full funding for the Transportations Security Administration (TSA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Secret Service.
