FACT SHEET: President Trump Steals from Law Enforcement, Proposes Cutting Funds for Police in 2026

May 13, 2025

WASHINGTON — While President Trump and Republicans in Congress claim they support law enforcement, the Trump Administration’s actions tell a very different story. Instead of investing in law enforcement and our police officers, President Trump’s budget defunds public safety to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

A new fact sheet from House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) shows how President Trump’s budget proposal would reduce law enforcement funding by billions of dollars, pulling officers off the streets of the communities they keep safe. The fact sheet details how:

  • President Trump’s 2026 budget would have a devastating impact on public safety.
  • President Trump’s illegal withholding of funds shortchanges law enforcement.
  • President Trump and House Republicans do not respect law enforcement.

“It is impossible to reconcile President Trump’s claimed support for law enforcement with his budget proposal and with the actions his administration has already taken to suffocate vital public safety programs. The President’s ‘skinny’ budget plainly defunds the police to the tune of billions of dollars, with over $1 billion cut just from Department of Justice programs that support local law enforcement and reduce violent crime, hate crime, and crime against women. Over half a billion dollars is cut from the FBI’s budget, which Director Patel told the Appropriations Committee was insufficient for carrying out the Bureau’s duties. The Trump budget means less support for law enforcement around the country, and more gun crime, drug crime, organized crime, cyber crime, and greater threats of terrorism,” said Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03). “The Trump Administration’s harm to law enforcement is not a hypothetical or numbers on a page—the actions they have already taken jeopardize public safety. The illegal freezing and cancellation of funding for Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants has already hurt the ability of local law enforcement agencies to hire and train law enforcement. FBI and the Department of Justice have lost scores of employees who protect the public to Elon Musk’s and President Trump’s reckless purging of public servants. President Trump pardoned and released violent insurrectionists who injured Capitol Police Officers. When it comes to investing in law enforcement, this President’s actions speak louder than his words.”
