DeLauro Statement on Unanimous House Passage of Senate Payout Repeal
WASHINGTON – Today, House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement regarding the unanimous vote in the House to repeal the Senate payout provision that was snuck into the Legislative Branch appropriations bill at the 11th hour and would allow eight Republican Senators implicated in the January 6th insurrection to collect at least $1 million each from American taxpayers.
“This provision should never have been enacted in the first place. Senate Republicans snuck it in at the last minute without telling anybody – Democrats or Republicans – in the House, before forcing the vote on us. As the vote last night showed, the House is unanimous in our opposition to this abuse of power. Members of Congress should not be allowed to profit from their votes. American taxpayers should not be forced to pay the bill for partisan payouts, least of all for Senate Republicans who were implicated in the insurrection that nearly toppled our democracy.
“Majority Leader Thune must bring this measure to a vote at once. The American people deserve to know on the record who supports taxpayer funded payouts for Republican Senators, and who does not. If they really do support this cash grab, they should own it.
“Leader Thune, call the vote.”
