DeLauro Statement on Trump Administration Renewed Attempts to Dismantle Department of Education
WASHINGTON – Today, House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement regarding the Trump administration’s renewed attempts to dismantle the Department of Education:
“I strongly oppose the Trump administration’s continued efforts to dismantle the Department of Education.
“American families are not asking for this. Nine out of ten children in the United States are educated through public schools. Two-thirds of Americans oppose reducing or eliminating the Department of Education. For so many Americans, access to public education was the key to getting ahead. President Trump is so detached from the reality most Americans are living that he cannot see how ending public education kills the American Dream.
“Any attempt to unilaterally remove programs from the Department of Education will fundamentally alter their purpose. This is not about efficiency – it is about creating so many needless bureaucratic hurdles that the Department of Education is rendered useless – a death by a thousand cuts. Imposing massive, chaotic, and abrupt changes on a whim will waste millions of dollars in duplicative administrative costs and impose wasteful burdens on the American education system.
“Energy prices are up. Grocery prices are up. Housing costs are up. The price of health care is about to skyrocket. Americans increasingly cannot afford the basic necessities of everyday life. What is the Trump administration’s focus? Dismantling the Department of Education.
“The Trump administration must follow our nation’s education and appropriations laws as Congress – Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate – wrote them.”
