DeLauro Statement on Trump Administration Dismantling Corporation for Public Broadcasting
For decades, Corporation for Public Broadcasting Delivered Trusted News and Education to Every Zip Code in America
NEW HAVEN – Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement in response to news that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) – which supports the operations of National Public Radio (NPR), the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and local public media stations – will begin winding down after targeted defunding by the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans:
“Instead of tackling the cost-of-living crisis, President Trump Administration has decided that what Americans most want is the dismantling of their local PBS station. The recissions package marshaled by OMB Director Russ Vought and Congressional Republicans – and signed into law by President Trump – guts the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides essential funding to local PBS and NPR member stations across the country.
“This policy not only threatens beloved PBS KIDS programming like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood or Sesame Street, it puts lives at risk by dismantling one of the only trusted sources for emergency alerts in rural America.
“For millions – especially in small towns and underserved communities – public broadcasting is more than children’s shows. It is education. It is safety. It is connection. This is not just an assault on public media – it is an attack on families, rural communities, teachers, and parents who depend on this programming to raise informed kids and stay safe during disasters.
“President Trump promised to defend the First Amendment. Instead, he has made his priorities clear. Tax breaks for billionaires first – and censorship second.”
