DeLauro Statement in Support of Stripping Homeland Security Bill from Senate Funding Package
WASHINGTON – Today, House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro issued a statement in support of removing the Homeland Security funding bill from the six-bill minibus up for consideration in the Senate this week.
“I strongly support jettisoning the Homeland Security funding measure from the minibus and moving ahead with a vote on the five remaining appropriations bills, each of which passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support.
“If considered on their own, the Defense, Financial Services, Transportation-Housing, State-Foreign Operations, and Labor-HHS-Education funding bills would pass easily, securing important funding for NIH biomedical research, Child Care, education, and a pay raise for our troops. The House could quickly clear those five bills, averting or minimizing a lapse in funding that would shutter, at least partially, eight cabinet departments and dozens of agencies within them.
“ICE and CBP must be overhauled from top to bottom. Many of these agents lack proper training, cannot be held accountable, and have behaved lawlessly. They have beaten, harassed, and escalated confrontations with peaceful demonstrators and innocent bystanders too many times to count. They have killed law-abiding U.S. citizens and covered up investigations into their killings. Leadership in the White House and at the Department of Homeland Security have falsely claimed these victims were ‘assassins’ and ‘domestic terrorists’ – fanning the flames of division and failing to bring down tensions on the streets. This chaos must stop.
“Coming together on common sense policies to end this assault on our communities will allow us to move forward on the Homeland Security funding bill.”
The Financial Services, General Government and State, Foreign Operations funding bills passed the House by vote of 341-79. The Defense, Labor-HHS-Education, and Transportation-Housing bills passed by a vote of 341-88. Together, these five bills account for nearly $1.2 trillion in federal spending.
