DeLauro Statement on President Trump’s Irresponsible Request to Kick the Can Down the Road for Four Months

Reckless Plan Pushed by Russ Vought Sets Government Up for Another Republican Shutdown

WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement on President Trump and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russ Vought’s extreme request to kick the can down the road on government funding until January 31, 2026:

“Today’s request from President Trump and Russ Vought to kick the can down the road on government funding until January 31 makes it clear the White House wants to be able to continue stealing from American communities for another four months. The longer they delay, the longer Russ Vought can take resources from families, veterans, and farmers, and deprive the working class, the middle class, and vulnerable Americans of life-sustaining research to cure diseases, critical infrastructure investments across the country, and resources to lower the cost of living. Just like President Trump’s budget, which was historically late and incomplete, the White House slow walked this request to intentionally back Congress into a corner. I refuse to let that happen.

“This is the latest example of the White House trying to thwart the bipartisan appropriations process that invests in our constituents. Any spending package must protect Democratic priorities and Congress's power of the purse.

“Delaying the critical work of funding the government until the end of January is only step one in President Trump and Russ Vought's plan to never fund it at all.”
