DeLauro Statement on President Trump Breaking His Own Record for Longest Government Shutdown in History

November 6, 2025

WASHINGTON — Today, House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement as President Trump’s government shutdown broke the record for the longest in history. A record previously held by President Trump.

“President Trump has broken his own record for the longest government shutdown in history. And voters know who to blame. After overwhelming Democratic victories Tuesday night, President Trump admitted that Americans see through Republicans’ charade. They know it is President Trump and Republican leadership who are responsible for the government shutdown and are rightfully holding them accountable.

“With each passing day, President Trump refuses to end the shutdown, more and more families are hurt. President Trump still refuses to fully fund the food stamp program, despite having money available to do so. His illegal attempts to lay off thousands of federal workers have thrust the men and women who provide crucial public services into an untenable limbo. And his failure to stop health care costs from skyrocketing has led to sticker shock for the more than 20 million Americans who get coverage through the Affordable Care Act.

“Democrats have been ready and willing to work while Speaker Mike Johnson has kept Republicans on vacation. We’re ready to stop health care costs from skyrocketing, keep food assistance flowing, and protect the public services millions of Americans rely on. Whenever President Trump and Republican leadership decide to join us is up to them.”
