DeLauro Statement on JD Vance Effort to Raid Working Families’ Child Care Funding

September 6, 2026

WASHINGTON – House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) today condemned the Trump administration’s reported plan to restrict federal child care funding:

“Supporting stay-at-home parents should never come at the expense of working families. The Trump administration wants to raid the Child Care and Development Fund – money Congress provided to help low- and moderate-income parents afford child care so they can work or go to school – and redirect those same limited dollars to a new benefit available only to married couples. That is unconscionable.

“At a time when families are already struggling to find and afford child care, this proposal would force more parents to compete for the same inadequate pot of money, threaten child care providers, and disproportionately hurt single working parents, most of whom are mothers.

“If Republicans want to support families, they should join Democrats in passing the expanded Child Tax Credit and increasing access to affordable child care – not rob Peter to pay Paul while imposing their preferred definition of what a family should look like.”
