DeLauro Statement on Congressman Steny Hoyer not Seeking Re-Election

January 8, 2026

WASHINGTON – Today, House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro released a statement on the retirement of Congressman Steny Hoyer, Ranking Member of the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee:

“I want to congratulate my friend and colleague on an extraordinary career in Congress. Since my first day in office 35 years ago, Steny has been a staple in the House of Representatives. A thoughtful partner in legislating, a patient sounding board for ideas – or complaints – and an honest broker, able to weave together the disparate cords of an at times unruly Congress. There is no stronger defender of the House of Representatives as an institution than Steny Hoyer.

“The same talent and tenacity that Steny displayed as Whip and Majority leader, he brings to bear on the Appropriations Committee, where he now serves as the Ranking Member of the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee.

“Even over the past several days leading up to his announcement, Steny has been working tirelessly to negotiate a Financial Services bill that can come to the floor well before the January 30th deadline, illustrating in real time the skill and expertise that will be so sorely missed in future Congresses.

“I look forward to all we will accomplish in the next year.”
