DeLauro on Court’s Ruling Against President Trump’s Dismantling of Department of Education
WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee and Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement on a federal court’s ruling that President Trump and Secretary McMahon are illegally dismantling the Department of Education:
“The federal judiciary continues to reaffirm what I told Secretary McMahon in our hearing yesterday: the Trump Administration’s actions amount to an unlawful destruction of the Department of Education, which was created by Congress and can only be undone by Congress. This is excellent news for America’s children, nine out of 10 of whom are educated in public schools.
“President Trump and Secretary McMahon have eviscerated the Department of Education, illegally firing half of the Department’s staff in an unlawful effort to destroy public education in this country. The court rightly found that the mass firings amount to an unlawful attempt to shutter the Department of Education by the executive branch. Only Congress has the authority to do so. This is yet another loss in court for Secretary McMahon, who has already been blocked from letting DOGE access student loan borrowers’ private information, from interfering with local school curricula, from punishing school districts for curricula she disagrees with, and from stealing COVID relief aid from states and school districts.
“I am proud to have led an amicus brief—joined by 191 of my House Democratic colleagues—challenging Secretary McMahon’s unlawful firings, which the court cited in today’s ruling. I will never stop fighting against the Trump Administration’s dangerous dismantling of public education, which is undermining and jeopardizing the futures of millions of children in this country.”
