"We recognize that this is an extraordinary time for the United States Army. Our nation presently has over 187,000 soldiers deployed in 140 countries around the world. These soldiers are the Army’s most critical resource. We will talk today about the training, equipment, and resources needed to give our soldiers the skills and tools needed to accomplish their missions. But we would also like you to know that the members of this Committee care deeply about the welfare and quality of life of our men and women in uniform. We want to make sure we take care of these needs, as well."

"To best identify the needs of our Veterans, we must hear from them and partner with those who know them best: our Veteran Service Organizations. Today’s witnesses work tirelessly to assist our Veterans daily as they navigate the too-often cumbersome VA system, the transition to civilian life, and the physical, emotional, psychological, and financial challenges our Veterans face upon returning home. While VA has made great strides in recent years, we know our work is far from done."
"Though the water resource needs of our country vary from region to region, there is a constant and essential need to invest in this infrastructure. Without significant investment in our infrastructure, the dichotomy of water surpluses in the Midwest, and water shortages in the West nonetheless threatens Americans from all walks of life. Although Congress last year rejected the Administration’s proposed deep cuts, the Trump administration has once again proposed to slash funding for the Corps and Bureau of Reclamation, this time by 22 percent and 32 percent respectively. When will the White House learn their proposal is flawed and dangerous to our people and our communities?"
