Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, today issued the following statement regarding the FY2017 Continuing Resolution:

“It is a disgrace that more than two months into the new fiscal year, Congress will kick the can down the road nearly another five months for purely partisan reasons.  Having already failed this year to adopt a budget, pass Appropriations bills, and restore regular order, the majority’s failure to enact full-year funding is not surprising, but nonetheless shameful.

“In addition to maintaining government services through April 28th, I am pleased this Continuing Resolution provides additional funding to respond to natural disasters, improve water infrastructure, respond to threats abroad, and support biomedical research.

“I am extremely disappointed the majority included just $7 million – one-fifth of the amount requested by the Administration and by New York City – to reimburse for the cost of helping protect the President-elect through January 20th.  New York taxpayers should not be forced to foot the bill for the federal responsibility of protecting the President-elect, and I will work to ensure a future funding bill makes New York City whole.

“I am concerned about the provision establishing a new standard for consideration of the nominee for Secretary of Defense.  Civilian leadership of the military is a bedrock principle of our democracy that must not be eroded in any way.”
