House Republicans Set the Stage to Hurt Hardworking Americans, Reward Billionaires and the Biggest Corporations
WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) released the following statement on the topline funding levels and subcommittee allocations released by House Republicans:
"Once again, the House Republican majority is failing American families by leaving on the table at least $75 billion in investments that those families depend on. The cost of living has risen year after year. Huge corporations are making supercharged profits, gouging consumers on everything from food to medicine. Billionaires and their lobbyists are rigging the game to benefit themselves at the expense of hardworking Americans. Women's rights are being rolled back a century in front of our very eyes. House Republicans' response is to make all these problems worse, to make it easier for billionaires and large corporations and harder for the middle class. House Republicans are taking this opportunity to cut access to the programs our veterans, seniors, servicemembers, children, and families depend on.
"This is the exact same process we saw play out last year. A process where House Republicans, held hostage by their most extreme members, led us from one shutdown threat to another. It was messy, chaotic, harmful, and embarrassing for House Republicans who could not pass their own funding bills. It ended with the majority realizing they could not pass bills without House Democrats. The only difference between last year and this year is that their majority is even smaller. I call on Republicans to rethink the funding levels they released. Increase nondefense and defense funding levels by at least one percent as agreed to almost a year ago today.
"We know how this will end. House Democrats are ready to negotiate bills that can actually become law. Bills that follow the agreement and help hardworking Americans."
