DeLauro Statement on the Passing of Former Congressman John W. Olver
Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) released the following statement honoring the life and legacy of former United States Representative John W. Olver:
“My heart breaks over the loss of a brilliant public servant, Congressman John W. Olver. John and I came to Congress the same year, both driven by the urgent need to help our communities.
“John was selfless, humble, and fearless. He led by example, pushing back on decisions he felt were unjust and never shying away from a public demonstration. I will never forget the ‘Save the Children’ tie John wore as we protested attempted cuts to school lunch programs. John never lost sight of the need to protect communities most in need. It is that legacy of passion and purpose that he leaves with his colleagues in Congress, his constituents in Massachusetts, and our nation.
“I worked closely with John on the Appropriations Committee. As Chair of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, John knew the importance of strengthening our infrastructure and ensuring his constituents had the resources they needed to complete critical local projects. One of the hallmarks of his tenure as Chairman was strengthening the connection between transportation and housing as a means to improve the quality of life for families in need. I am a better public servant for serving with him and will never forget the expertise and passion he brought to the Committee.
“It was an honor to serve with John, to learn from him, and to fight by his side. I join all who mourn this loss and hope we all find comfort in the impact he continues to have. My prayers are with his children Martha, Cary, and Douglas, his grandson Marshall, and their entire family during this difficult time."
