DeLauro Statement on New, More Extreme Republican Continuing Resolution

Press Release

House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) released the following statement in response to the House Republicans’ more extreme Continuing Resolution:

“We are less than 48 hours from a government shutdown. The American people need Democrats and Republicans to work together to keep the services and programs they depend on functioning. It is past time for House Republicans to stop fighting amongst themselves and prevent a lapse in government funding that would harm the economy and hurt the children, families, seniors, and veterans—countless people who would lose their livelihoods under a shutdown when the cost of living is already too high. This is no way to govern.

“The extreme Republican Continuing Resolution put forward today fails to provide us with a path forward. It would slash investments in cancer research, leave communities recovering from natural disasters out to dry, undercut allies like Israel and Ukraine, defund state and local law enforcement, and take food out of the mouths of millions. As temperatures drop, it cuts the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) by 74 percent. That is 5 million families who will go without heat this winter, or see their benefits reduced.

“Shutdowns have consequences. Shutdowns always hurt our economy and the American people. We are talking about taking away people’s paychecks and their ability to feed their families. These are not hypothetical impacts. We need to keep working through full year funding bills without risking families’ livelihoods.”
