Trump To Propose “Every Child Left Behind” Budget
WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee and Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement in response to President Trump reportedly considering eliminating all funding for Head Start in his fiscal year 2026 budget request.
“President Trump continues to prove he has no plan to address the cost of living crisis families are facing every day. The extremely high cost of child care is making it impossible for families to make ends meet. Hundreds of thousands of families depend on Head Start for their child to have a place in an early education or Preschool classroom. Eliminating Head Start to pay for tax cuts for billionaires would be an unrivaled and unthinkable betrayal of middle class, working class, and vulnerable families who need help with the cost of living. Head Start helps families make ends meet while their young children build the most basic and fundamental skills to begin their education—an education that is a requirement to reaching their American Dream.
“Since they froze payments for Head Start early in the Administration, President Trump and Elon Musk have shown they will not fight for the middle class. As the cost of living goes up, they have done nothing but shatter the hopes and dreams of young Americans, so that they can continue pillaging services families rely on and rigging the economy in their favor. They are attacking education to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. Head Start has had broad, bipartisan support since it was created—this is not a Republican or Democratic issue. This gets to the very heart of who we are as a nation. We must all band together to fight to fully fund Head Start, and to protect this program, which has enabled the dreams of entire generations.”
