President Trump Decimates the Path to Achieving the American Dream

March 20, 2025

WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee and Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro issued the following statement on President Trump’s recent step to unlawfully eliminate the Department of Education:

“My parents instilled in me that a focus on education was essential to living a better life. President Trump’s unlawful order to dismantle public education is the latest evidence that he does not care about working or middle-class people and kids. He does not care about helping hardworking people build a better life so they no longer have to struggle to get by or live paycheck to paycheck. President Trump cares only about tax breaks for billionaires and the biggest corporations.

“My Republican colleagues need to speak up. What happens when there is no teacher in the classroom? What happens when children with disabilities stop receiving necessary accommodations and services? What happens when students drop out of college because they cannot afford it?

“Elon Musk and President Trump are abandoning America’s children and families. If my colleagues want to debate the value of education, they should put their name on a bill and let us debate it. Better yet, hold a town hall. Listen to your constituents and let them tell you how they feel.”
