President Trump Asks for Republican Rubberstamp on Elon Musk’s Destruction
**NEW: FACT SHEET ON PRESIDENT TRUMP’S RESCISSIONS PROPOSAL**
WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement in response to the Trump administration’s proposed rescissions package:
“President Trump is not laser-focused on the cost-of-living crisis, that he is actually making worse. President Trump unleashed Elon Musk, an unchecked and massively conflicted billionaire with immense financial interests in China, to dismantle and destroy the parts of our government that serve the American people, protect Americans from global threats, and maintain American leadership abroad, in order to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.
“Many of these sweeping cuts are from agencies created by Congress and illegally dismantled by DOGE, with cases pending in the courts. Now, despite Elon Musk’s exit, President Trump is asking Republicans in Congress to rubberstamp DOGE’s destruction and codify it into law. President Trump yields global leadership to China. He is cutting off rural communities and working families from watching their local high school sports team games, accessing critical information like severe weather alerts, or learning from PBS KIDS children’s programming, like Sesame Street and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. This does not create efficiency, nor does it help the American people. Congress needs to fight for the middle-class, the working-class, and the vulnerable, not protect the interests of billionaires and big corporations.
“The President has no inherent authority to unilaterally freeze appropriations and never has. Every day this funding was frozen before Congress received this special message was an unlawful attack on the resources Americans were promised. Congress should reject these cuts and focus on the issues that are most important to the American people, like reducing the cost-of-living.”
