FACT SHEET: Trump Has Been Defunding Homeland Security Since Day One

WASHINGTON – House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) released a fact sheet detailing how the Trump Administration under the recently fired and forever-disgraced Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been dismantling the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and making Americans less safe since day one.
The new document comes as Republican infighting and Trump Administration incompetence push the lapse of DHS funding into its 37th day, and after Democrats filed a discharge petition to bring up Ranking Member DeLauro’s bill to fully fund the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Secret Service, and more.
“I have a bill to end the Trump-caused chaos at our airports and fund TSA. Republicans are blocking it because it does not also include money for ICE. The long lines, the dysfunction, the injustice of forcing TSA workers to go without pay, all rest squarely on Republicans’ shoulders,” said Ranking Member DeLauro. “This is how the Trump Administration wants government to work: not at all. President Trump and Secretary Noem have been working to dismantle and defund DHS from the beginning. They sought to eliminate FEMA altogether. They proposed slashing funding for cybersecurity by $500 million. They blocked, slow-walked, and delayed crucial grant funding for months. They are not fit to lead. Republicans must sign on to the discharge petition to bring up my bill to fund TSA, FEMA, the Coast Guard, cybersecurity and more, while separating ICE and CBP funding out as negotiations continue. We could end the chaos this week if only a handful of Republicans decided to join Democrats. It is long past time they did so.”
According to a recent reports, President Trump has no desire to end this shutdown. Instead, he has deployed ICE agents to airports to stand around and intimidate travelers while doing nothing to reduce security lines.
It is simply the latest example of the failures the American people have come to expect under complete Republican control in Washington.
